What is the best cover of all time... or your favourite?

I like Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" (originally done by Nine Inch Nails).

I am not an Orgy fan in the slightest, but I always thought their cover of Blue Monday was good. I also though the Atari's cover of 'Boys of Summer' was solid.

Edit: I'm sure there are many others that are not coming to mind...one thats does is Redman, Eric Sermon & Keith Murray's cover of Rapper's Delight!

Another one of my favorite covers is

Metro by System of a Down

OMG, I can't believe I forgot that one. AAF is one of my favorite bands.

Also, another one I just thought of:

Matisyahu - "Message In a Bottle"

That's a cover? I had no idea! I should probably know, considering it's one of my fave tunes of all time. Who did the original?

Korn - Word up - I know, silly song, but I loved it when I was a kid for some reason, and still love the Korn cover.

My brain is mush right now, but I know there's a few covers I love that haven't been mentioned yet. I'll try and come up with a few more to post....

Oh, pretty much all the songs Nirvana covered for Unplugged - Live in New York are great.

Matt Good did a cover of a Depeche Mode song that was pretty good, but can't rmember the name of the song... I think it's 'Enjoy the Silence'.

some of my favorites off the top of my head are:

    Uncle Tupelo - Effigy (CCR)
The Replacements - Another Girl, Another Planet (The Only Ones)
Nirvana - Man Who Stole The World (Bowie)
Afghan Whigs - My World Is Empty Without You (Supremes)

and I totally agree that Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt" is fantastic. He took an already great song into an emotional masterpiece. didn't Reznor originally write the song for/about Cash?

Yeah. Dylan wrote it but I can understand you not knowing that because you can't understand what he's saying.

Well, that, plus I don't think I've ever heard the Dylan version before, which is odd 'cause my Pops listened to a CRAPLOAD of both Dylan and Jimi growing up. Maybe I heard it but didn't recognize it or something... does the original sound much different from Jimi's cover?

Oh, another one, now that Doc mentioned Dylan... Lay Lady Lay by Ministry. Love that song. Sounds NOTHING like the orignal (which I also like), but pretty tough to make Ministry sound like Dylan. Al J certainly put his own special touch on that one. Aside from Watchtower, probably my fave cover of all time, even though it doesn't really sound like the orignal much, if at all.

Am I the only person who likes the NIN version of 'Hurt' better than Cash's? I feel NIN actual original music suits the theme of the song much better.

Anyways, here are some of my favs off the top of my head:

Headstones - Tweeter and The Monkeyman
Cake - I Will Survive (by the way, check out their cover of War Pigs)
Stone Temple Pilots - Dancing Days
System of a Down - Snowblind
    Gob - Paint It Black

Ah, there's probably tons more that I'm missing....

Yes, the most under-rated, straight ahead, no bullshit rock band Canada ever produced. Sort of like if Queens of the Stone Age weren't stoned all the time.

Nope, you're not the only one, I'm totally with you on that. I love the Reznor version, not a fan of the Cash version. It's not horrible by any means, but I would never specifically seek it out to download it or listen to it over the original. I realize there's special meaning involved with the Cash version, but I still think the origial is a better song, both musically and vocally. the only think the Cash version has going for it, IMO, is the sentimentality aspect that's been attached to it.

Then again, I've never been a big Johnny $ fan to begin with, so that may be part of it for me.

P.S. Tea Party does a pretty solid cover of Paint it Black too. Was thinking about it yesterday actually when trying to think up other covers I like, but it's not one of my faves, so I didn't bother to list it, but it's pretty good too.

There are tons of huge covers, most have them are in this thread already. If I had to pick one as the best, it's Metallica Whiskey in the Jar.

One that hasn't been mentioned yet is Gary Jules Mad World. Yes I know, you're kicking yourself
