Crazy to think he hung the skates up 12 years ago.

Yeah, it's a milestone birthday for him but I'm surprised by all the attention.

it's because it makes all the sportswriters feel old and gives them an excuse to talk about the good old days.

I'm not shocked at all that they are going crazy with this, he farts and we find out.

Remember when he got married? I think Canada shut down for that.

i was surprised too., Its all cool for the media to bring it up today but there was a celebratory countdown starting sometime a few days ago...

I don't need his birthday to remember what he has done... Wayne Gretzky was crazy to me, how do you get the number 99 and do what he did?? He knew what he was doing wearing that number. i dont believe the humble story he says, '9 was my favourite number and it was taken so i added another 9.' sure, roll eyes. He knew what he was doing wearing that number and i give props for Gary Bettman for retiring 99 from the league. It might be the best thing he ever did...

you know hes great, look at the nitpicking starting at zero from this article at nhl.com:

Here's a look at some of them:
No one in NHL history has put up the kind of numbers Wayne Gretzky did.
A look at 'The Great One' by the numbers http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=550569

-- 0 -- Goals scored by Gretzky in seven regular-season games at the United Center in Chicago, the most regular-season games he played in any building without scoring a goal. (He did have two playoff goals there.) Gretzky went without a goal in only seven of the 49 arenas in which he played. the only one in which he didn't get a point was the Springfield Civic Center, where he played one game in 1979-80 for Edmonton against the Hartford Whalers, who were playing there while the Civic Center in Hartford was undergoing repairs
