For all of those who have been in the keeper, just wanted to drop a line saying that I will be getting this league all sorted out and what not over the next week or so... Y'all get the updates from the Yahoo Groups pages etc. I know we still have time, but it will be February before we know it...

Alright y'all...... Just started getting the league ready. Still plenty to do, but with January rolling by pretty quickly, thought it be a good idea to at least get started and figure out who all is returning and who all isn't.

The league:

Fat Yanks -- OUT
CayugaPosse
Calgary Jr. Sports
King Killah -- In
RB Chimp -- in
MKMayers -- in
Green Monster (O/6) -- in
Beanz -- in
Hobbes -- in
Suckerpuncher -- in
Studzz -- in
BoredGuys -- in

I'll have updates in the Groups pages as well as here as we move along. I'll have dates and stuff for deadlines and crap as we go.

Yeah it's keep 5, you lose the pick the round a player was drafted+1, FA pickups cost a 10th rounder.
There's a link in the grou to the google spreadsheet i did for the draft last year if you want to figure out who costs what pick.

02-08-2010, 03:51 PM
Jason Bartlett (TB - SS) - 10
Jason Bay (NYM - OF) - 3
Hank Blalock (Tex - 1B,3B) - 10
Billy Butler (KC - 1B) - 10
Asdrubal Cabrera (Cle - 2B,SS) - 10
Brad Hawpe (Col - OF) - 10
Ian Kinsler (Tex - 2B) - 1
Nate McLouth (Atl - OF) - 4
Jhonny Peralta (Cle - 3B,SS) - 7
Pablo Sandoval (SF - C,1B,3B) - 12
Josh Willingham (Was - OF) - 10
Ben Zobrist (TB - 2B,SS,OF) - 10
David Aardsma (Sea - RP) - 17
Félix Hernández (Sea - SP) - 5
J.P. Howell (TB - RP) - 10
Francisco Liriano (Min - SP,RP) - 19
Ryan Madson (Phi - RP) - 10
Gil Meche (KC - SP) - 18
Leo Núñez (Fla - RP) - 10
Roy Oswalt (Hou - SP) - 2
Wandy Rodríguez (Hou - SP) - 11
Huston Street (Col - RP) - 15
Edinson Vólquez (Cin - SP) - 6
Brad Ziegler (Oak - RP) - 15

Edited in the round I would lose.

Obvious guys I wouldn't keep are:

Blalock - 10
Cabrera - 10
McLouth - 4
Peralta - 7
Willingham - 10
J.P Howell - 10
Madson - 10
Liriano - 19
Meche - 18
Nunez - 10
Oswalt - 2
Volquez - 6
Ziegler - 15
Rodriguez - 11

That leaves to pick 5 from:

Bartlett -10
Bay - 3
Butler - 10
Hawpe - 10
Kinsler - 1
Sandoval - 12
Zobrist - 10
Aardsma - 17
Hernandez - 5
Street - 15

Obviously Sandoval is a total lock. I also have to lock in Felix Hernandez @ round 5. Those are 2 guarantees. Zobrist @ 10 is a pretty big steal too, so I think I would add him to my team. That leaves 2 spots. I don't think it makes sense for me to keep Kinsler considering I have first overall pick anyway, so if he's the best player there, I can just rescoop him right back up..so I would take him off the list. I know you all don't like taking pitchers, but Street @ 15 might be a steal. He's been really iffy in his career and he pitches in Coors but that was a great year he had last year. Hawpe maybe as one? Decent value in 10, good park to hit in too. If I keep 2 players @ round 10 (Zobrist, Hawpe) one would count as round 11 anyway.

So that keeper list would look like:

Sandoval - 12
Zobrist - 10
Hawpe - 11
Hernandez - 5
Street - 15

I could also take a flyer on Bay and take a 3rd round pick on him and dump street..lots of options here..any opinions? Thanks for the help guys.

I'm in the league also so I probably wouldn't be much help when it comes to suggesting keepers, but here is a link to a spreadsheet done by boredguy that shows the draft results from last year. Then you can figure out when your players were drafted and what draft picks you'll lose from keeping your players.

Kinsler is up for trade. He was drafted 1st overall so it would count as a 1st round pick. I would want another keeper or some picks. Offer away if you want Kinsler.

jokah03

Just to clarifiy 100%, how do trades work. Is it the obvious way or is something different?

Obvious way would be I'll give you my 5th round pick for Player X - Player X was a FA Pickup, so you would also lose your 10th round pick. So to keep player X, you would have to give up your 5th and 10th rounders? Hope KK can clarify for all of us.

yes I think that would be correct. whatever you give up in the draft (picks and/or players) you must ALSO give up the round to keep the player you are receiving.

boredguy

Here's the thing, the way trades have been done is that when you trade players the new player keeps the old players draft spot. So if you trade Puckett who you drafted in the 5th to someone else for Bo Jackson who they drafted in the 12th, when it comes time for keepers Jackson would cost you the 5th and Puckett would cost them a 12th.
This is why i wanted to clarify a possible deal i had with Jokah, when you trade picks if you trade a 3rd round pick for a player, well that player should take on a 3rd round pick, but then of course you don't have a pick that round to be traded. I asked in PM, but having it explained in this thread makes more sense.

King_Killah
02-11-2010, 07:21 PM
What up y'all. Here's some clarification. I thought we discussed and changed the trade rule last season, but guess not. TO make things simpler and more fair, here is how we are gonna roll.

I'll take Jokah's example:

He trades a 5th round pick for PLAYER X who was a FA. Jokah will LOSE his 5th round pick due to trading it. He will also lose his 10th round pick if he is keeping PLAYER X due to draft value starting in the 10th for FA pick-up keepers.

The other example tossed around has TEAM A trading Kirby Puckett, 5th round for Bo Jackson, 12th rounder from TEAM B. If both players are kept, TEAM A now loses a 11th (Jackson's value + 1 round) and TEAM B loses his 4th (Puckett's value +1 round).

Hope this helps...I'll post in the Groups pages also.

8 keepers would be 1/3 of your whole team and half of your starters. It doesn't help the teams who finished at the bottom of the standings every year.

Alright... here is what I did. I gave us the corner infielder and the middle infielder positions. As for the outfield, I split it up... one each, LF/CF/RF plus 2 OF. Since we have the two extra OF and two extra IF, I took away the UTIL spot. I expanded the DL from 2 to 4 but shrunk the bench from 6 to 4.

Keepers.... Let's go with 7. That's a good number for the size roster.

I also adjusted the divisions to what they were last year to build a rivalry type of setting. Obviously Redneck, Rhyno, and Zweld weren't here last year, so they are placed in the division of the team they took over.

Can we get keepers in by say........Sunday?

Do we want to do the live draft or would we rather do the draft offline through the groups pages??

I'd prefer to do a live draft but is that even possible given the way our keepers are set up in this league? Can you assign them in Yahoo pre-draft where they take up the appropriate draft picks?

Also - I'm rejoining the yahoo group under a different YahooID. Please accept my request to join the group. :D

I'll accept you! Do you need to change it for the league also?? If so, I'll have to send you a transfer invite. And yes... (at least I am pretty sure) we can assign keepers to specific rounds, at least we were able to in football. I'll check it out.

Nope, my Yahoo ID with the actual league is fine. For some reason I had a different ID signed up with for the group, so I just wanted to fix that.

If we do a live draft any chance to do it on a weekend afternoon or start it earlier? 8:30pm would be 2:30am for me and almost no chance for me to take part in it. And given the fact we expand rosters etc. it would really suck not to be at the live draft.

And I'm strongly opposed to cutting down bench spots. I personally (and probably some others, too) use bench spots primarly for pitchers. And all the changes happen to the hitters so why cut down bench spots?
I even feel like bench spots should be increased by 1 or 2. Since the starting roster for hitters is bigger there need to be a chance to deal with day-to-day / non-IR injuries.

And btw. why are there 2 CI spots and only 1 MI spot. Shouldn't it be 1 CI and 1 MI spot. Otherwise you could just make each team use 2 players on each infield position. Which would suck even more given the depth at certain positions.
And FA depth gets pretty thin if there are 2 CI spots. For example 24 1B needed with only 30 starters (more or less) in the MLB means that only half of the league can even get a backup who actually gets regular ABs. So if someone drafts 3-4 starting 1B someone else gets screwed.
And without a Util spot pure DH like David Ortiz are completely useless.

Sucker makes some really good points especially about the UTIL spot. I don't see why we have to make so many drastic changes to the league. I think the lineup should look like this.....

C,1B,2B,3B,SS,IF,RF,LF,CF,OF,UTIL
SP,SP,RP,RP,P,P,P
BN x5(6)
DL x2

Since I'm not sure, if you can't choose IF (infielder) as a position and CI and MI are your only options, then I would choose CI since 1B and 3B are deeper than 2B and SS. This setup has one of every position with one extra infielder, one extra outfielder, and one utility player. The bench should be 5-6 but no more since the FA/WW can get pretty thin. DL should always be at 2 possibly 3 especially in a big keeper league.

Thoughts?

I like it.
With the exception of the DL spots. The more the better. So many players get put on DL during the season since it's not season ending like in the NFL. And there are already some good players on DL to begin the year. With more DL spots it gives one more flexibility.

My idea of adding the extra positions and taking away some bench was partially to get away from the stocking piling of SP on the bench and reducing some of the depth on the WW. Gets more in depth and challenges your knowledge more. Maybe compromise and go with

C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CI, MI, CF, OF, OF, OF, Util, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL

Pretty much accommodates something for everyone that's discussed it.

Also maybe we could change OBP to BB's. Has the same basic effect but removes some the advantage that high AVG guys get in OBP.

suckerpuncher

To be honest, I have no clue.
I thought he might have been a FA pickup and I figured players won't lose their value when yomeone dumps them. Otherwise it wouldn't make much sense if some drops a 1st or 2nd rounder and the guy who picks him (including the guy who dropped him) can then keep him for a 10th round pick.

Made some adjustments... Been thinking of the league over the last couple of days.

I took out the MI, CI spots and just added one IF... so we got each infield position plus one extra infielder. I took away one extra outfield spot, but I like the individual OF positions so we'll roll with each OF position plus one extra OF and I given us back a UTIL spot. The pitching spots remain the same. Bench = 5 spots. Which is one less than what we had in the past. DL - I agree that since the DL spot isn't a season-ender like the NFL and guys get listed often, I think it's OK to have 4 DL spots. I was tossed between 3 and 5 so I decided on the average.

Sucker...I understand your time difference, so does anyone else have a problem with a weekend draft but it looks like we are in favor of the offline draft??

Bruce was drafted by Beanz in round 12 (12.05)

That doesn't answer the question :p He coulda been dropped, he had a few bad stretches in the season.
Based on what's happened previously, it doesn't matter where someone is drafted if he gets dropped it costs a FA pickup spot. It's only open for abuse in a trade type way for th person with #1 waiver, otherwise that player is gonna be claimed by someone else if he's worth it. I think we're all adult enough not to do that anyways. If a guy drops an early round player legitimately cause he thinks he's sucking and won't come back, i don't see why he wouldn't follow normal FA pickup rules.

Me too. I think it's the better solution. Maybe something to consider for the future.

But anyway the history of the 2010 season doesn't list the transcation from last year.
But I asked the Y! guy over on the cafe and if it's really that important if Bruce is worth a 10th or 11th round pick he could skim through the Y! database of our league from last year and find the right answer.
Let me know.

For those who haven't seen, I renewed the league.

First order of buisness, is getting everyone signed up to see who is in and who is out and to see if we need to fill spots.

Second order of buisness would be keepers. It made me select a keeper date, of course we can change that if we need to.

Then we need to determine whether we go old school and do the draft offline through the groups pages or do we dare attempt at trying to get everyone together online for a live draft. I am good with the old school draft, I am good with a live draft if we can get everyone to commit to being present, so there are no excuses about teams eating ass because of a missed draft.

ok ill start the annual arguement... I love the offline draft if we start it in a TIMELY manner....it gives everyone a chance to make a picks. I would hate the thought of a manager missing online draft due to "life obligations" in a league this old and all the time managers have invested over the years to see a " wasted" year due to those obligations...I know it gets tedious for some (me included) as the draft moves to the later stages, and people start to get frantic as the season approaches and we are only in the 7th round but we always get it done. t just feel this is the best way to allow everyone in different timezones, different jobs, school times, hell different lves period to have a fair chance of being competitive. this way there is no excuse..

just my two cents..

League has been renewed...... I forget if there were any issues needing discussion before the draft in this league. So, feel free to post some topics of concern and we'll see if we can get them ironed out before the draft time. Speaking of draft time.... Right now it is set for March 20th at 8pm with keepers due in on March 13th. Keepers are to be entered in at the league page on Yahoo. If there are any issues, please PM me to let me know. If keepers are not selected and I have no messages stating that there were issues, etc. you will lose your keepers. Remember, keepers are draft board valued. Once keepers are submitted, I will be sure they are placed in the correct spots prior to the draft. Trade doors are open. Feel free to trade players/keepers for players/keepers. Feel free to trade picks. Be sure that if picks are being traded that each team has an equal amount of picks by draft time, otherwise Yahoo will not allow it and then I'll have to make necessary adjustments to get Yahoo going. Meaning if team A has too many picks and team B not enough, I'll just take the last pick from team A and give it to team B.

That all said...... Timeline:

League rollcall....... Let's try to get this determined as soon as possible. Sure we have time, but why scramble if time starts ticking away. Below are all the teams, once I get confirmation via post in this thread, PM, email, text, etc.; I will confirm in this post.

Can someone PM a link to the group page? I've got the list of available teams/players from KK, but without draft values, I'm kind of in the dark.

Also, I assume you are allowed to keep multiple 1st round draft picks, it would just cost your highest available remaining pick right?

boredguy
03-15-2013, 11:44 AM
If you keep 2 guys who have the same round cost it'll cost the round after, so 2 5th round keepers would be a 5th and 6th, also all players move up a spot each year, so a player drafted in the 7th last year will cost a 6th this year. Draft was done online last year so nothing on the groups page to help, i'll list last year's draft of the teams here. Neither team made a trade, so any player not listed here would have been a FA pickup so cost a 10th, and of course if a player is listed here but not in final rosters you can't keep them.

Pitchers Stat Categories: Innings Pitched (IP), Wins (W), Saves (SV), Strikeouts (K), Holds (HLD), Earned Run Average (ERA), (Walks + Hits)/ Innings Pitched (WHIP), Quality Starts (QS)

03-27-2013, 07:15 AM
It's Free Agent Acquisition Budget.

You get a virtual budget (normally $100) which you can use to place bids on players on waivers. You can make bids between $0 and whatever amount you have left. If we use FAAB then waiver priority is only used in case two or more guys bid the same amount for a player (only for winning bids of course).

That is not something I would vote for. This doesn't need to be complicated. Waiver order takes care of all of that without having to place bids.

But you can make $0 bids and wouldn't lose any of your budget or your waiver priority for picking some replacement player.
I personally think FAAB is more fair when using continuous waivers. Otherwise you'd lose your good waiver position for picking up some scrub player and won't have a real shot of getting one of the better players on waivers during the season.
