With Bobby Cox retiring after the 2010 season, the Braves are gonna send him out on top... Bank it...

ATLANTA (AP)—Reliever Billy Wagner (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5536/;_ylt=Ao7rRtOzDq70bTODvkwde26pu7YF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5536/news;_ylt=AmPOAp.SWwIqpobQ5UKBGa2pu7YF) and the Atlanta Braves (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/atl/;_ylt=AqSKnizNuEuM6mPqwNViRwWpu7YF) agreed Wednesday to a $7 million, one-year contract.
The six-time All-Star gets $6.75 million in 2010 and the deal includes a $6.5 million club option for 2011 with a $250,000 buyout. The option would become guaranteed is he has 50 games finished next season.

“We feel this is a great start for us to put together a championship-quality team for 2010,” Braves general manager Frank Wren said in a statement. “Billy has been at the top of our list as a player we wanted to acquire for some time, and we’re excited to have him anchoring our bullpen.”
The 38-year-old left-hander missed most of last season following elbow ligament replacement surgery on Sept. 10, 2008. He returned to the New York Mets (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/nym/;_ylt=AvLqYY9DtiUJJRwKrMuQIDOpu7YF) on Aug. 20, reached 96 mph in his first appearance, then was traded to the Boston Red Sox (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/bos/;_ylt=AnwPJayRYLU942O5o0jHMVupu7YF) five days later.
Wagner was 1-1 with a 1.98 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 13 2-3 innings for the Red Sox. In Game 3 of the playoffs against the Angels, he allowed a hit and a walk in the eighth inning, and both runners scored against Jonathan Papelbon (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7614/;_ylt=AopqMtYpRKUZf1t2wkErrKipu7YF)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7614/news;_ylt=AsD5IewUFMTCASEVjV9.Rkqpu7YF) as Los Angeles rallied and completed a three-game sweep.
He is sixth on the career list with 385 saves and second among left-handers behind John Franco (424).

Getting a solid closer finally... However, I am not a big fan of Billy Wagner. But it's a start in the right direction.

No team will ever win the title with Wagner closing games. Even in his prime, he could never get big outs.

Such an ugly sign with Wagner. I can see him gone by summer. Like the roster though

That seems like a lot for an old, injury-prone closer to me.

I agree Wagner does not bring much.

I dont see ATL winning much with the team they have right now, that and trying to fight off Philly for the NL East will be tough.

Doctego

Disagree with them not winning much. Even with Wagner, I definitely see them contending for the wildcard.

Wildcard sure maybe, I still think it's Philly's division to win though.

Yea, I got tired of Wagner on NYM even before his injury.

When's he going to join the Marlins and Nationals to complete the NL East tour of duty?

Braves were one of the best teams after the break last year - I'm not that excited about Wagner in the closers role - I think he ends up setting the table for someone else before its all over.

I'm just glad to see the Braves making moves ......:)

This was actually more or less my point. It seems like that sat idle then made a deal once the season started... I am glad that they are filling spots now. I can also agree that Wagner doesn't get the "big" out when needed, but at least for me, he is better then what we have thrown out there in the recent past. You never knew who was closing in Atlanta, it was always game to game... Sure Soriano got the save opps last year, but I don't think he is a true closer. I like him in the 7th/8th.

Well so much for that ........... and Cox was going on and on about how tight his bull pen was going to be next year. :blah:

SI.com's Jon Heyman reports arbitration-eligible reliever Rafael Soriano has been traded to the Rays.

The deal is pending a physical, which probably won't go down until Thursday or morning or afternoon. It's not yet clear who the Braves are getting in return, though right-hander Jesse Chavez's name has been thrown around. Soriano should contend for the ninth-inning job in Tampa Bay. He had a 2.97 ERA, a 1.06 WHIP and a 102/27 K/BB ratio in 75 2/3 innings this past year. Dec. 10 - 1:52 am et

I was doing some reading on the minor leaguers the Braves got in the Vazquez deal - from what it appears this deal not only cut costs but landed a couple of fire balling young pitchers signed for the next few years.

So it basically cut payroll so we can go after a 1st baseman and gave us some talented young arms for the future. This may not be the miss the mark type of trade I initially thought it was.

You never know with any of these kids but you better hope so. As of right now, they got a 4th OF for a solid SP.

You never know - he was not so solid his first go around in NY iirc.

He was also asked to be the ace of the team, and the team isn't what it was. Vazquez has ace-like stuff and will be a #3/#4 for the Yankees. In no way, did the Braves get anywhere near the best of this deal.

They couldn't rid themselves of Lowe's ugly contract, so they had to unload Vazquez. Theres nothing wrong with that, but for Melky Cabrera, and possibly some mid/top tier prospects? Ugly.

He started out great and folded in the 2nd half (and playoffs). He claimed injury but who knows?? He won't have to be better than a #3 or #4 and he is great there.

Lou ought to take the bats away Tues and just let them practice throwing to one another

I am as stoked for baseball season as I have been in quite awhile.

I've only seen about 6 of Heywood's AB's but to me he looks like a mix of Garrett Anderson and Fred McGriff. He's got the demeanor and fluid stroke of Anderson with the Crime Dog's pop.

Theres only been two 20 year olds in the history of the game to hit 30 HR's - ARod and Tony Conigliaro...little early to say whether he'll do it but thats a real short list.

The Cubs look like a slow pitch softball team...that middle infield of Theriot/Fontenot has no range at all.

That and Glaus looks lost ......... but hey I take the series win.

There used to be a rule about teams playing the 7:05/35 (or later) games on the east coast then playing 1:00 (or earlier) games on the west coast. Not sure if there is a difference because the SF game is 4:05pm.

I know this is a Braves 2010 Championship Run thread, but that season built up the 2011 season. I am just getting over now the Braves giving up their Wild Card spot after holding the lead for how long... All they needed to to was beat Philly once in that last regular season series. F*ckers.... Anyway, the team needs work. The pitching lost its arms in that last quarter of the season. They just ran out of gas. The bats fizzled too. Chipper was supposed to retire last year, but due to injury, he didn't want to go out like that. Does he hang 'em up this off season?? Next season, we are in it. Phillies better watch out. I can hear it now. "Oh, Howard is out with the achilles. Rollins is out because the Phillies and Rollins couldn't come to an agreement on a contract."
