The San Jose Sharks (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/teams/san/;_ylt=Aru1Qvxto6EiqKx6Jb1oDGUmvLYF) put defenseman Kyle McLaren (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/1312/;_ylt=AgZ7MnEyrLh8sr_4N1UmvgMmvLYF) on waivers Tuesday, possibly ending the oft-injured veteran’s 4 1/2 -year tenure with the club.

Man, I would love for the Rangers to get someone who is actually capbable of throwing a body into someone. However, they are obvisouly tight on cap space. Maybe, if nobody claims him, the Rangers could send a package of Kalinin and.....Rissmiller () to get him.

Even just send them a draft pick, I'm sure they would take that rather then lose him for nothing, then just waive a player or two to fit him in the cap.

I'm sure some team will try and get him.

McLaren was never the quickest guy to begin with, and he's lost a step or two the past few yrs. He rarely throws those killer hip checks anymore - and when he tries, he's more likely to miss and put himself way out of position than connect.

I'm sure he'll land somewhere, but he's no longer the Kyle McLaren you're thinking of.

Kyle's knee injury really screwed him, being the type of player he was.. not sure he will ever be the same, but I think he is worth taking a flyer on.. If not for needed cap space and defensive additions, I could see the Sharks hanging onto him. Most of us kinda knew he was the one guy on the outskie the moment Marleau was guaranteed to stay. Kid used to lay one hell of a hip check and I always dug the yellow visor and the funny story as to how it came about. Definitely wish Kmac the best, wherever he ends up.

dang! I love the mustache too. It makes me wanna get naked.

Also, Is the Cheech back?? 2 goals tonight, he's off to a great start! Not to mention the fact that unlike last season, he is coming into the season healthy.. and personally, I really, really believe the Sharks offense is going to benefit greatly from a coaching change. Especially a guy like J. Cheechoo.

Also, Blake looks real fucking solid playing the point on the PP.

This is the best Sharks team (on paper, on ice yet to be seen) that I have seen in a while...

Agreed, the only thing I wish we had was Torrey. Loved that kid, hope he gets back into action sooooon!

And I wish my favorite Shark Jeff Freisen made the team, but hey.

P.S. That 'stash also makes me want to get naked a little bit. As long as there's a film camera and a director smoking a cigarette watching me. (And a pretty lady for me to do dirty things to).

Ya I'm getting tired of the whole Red Wings are unbeatable talk, I think the Sharks are ready to get at them, especially since they sniped a Wings coach(NHL needs its own spygate if you ask me) although I don't forsee McLellan rocking a bunny hug. Also he used to coach the broncos, Marleaus from around Swift so the Sharks are my official new homer team haha.

you know the best part about the Cheech Train being on track early on and having, what is it now, 3 goals on the season? (counting his shorty tonight)

He is typically a very SLOW starter and historically he doesn't really come on until midway through the season... and... so far, he isn't even playing on Thornton's line!

Sharks offense is looking solid in this very young season.

As a side and entirely unrelated note -- Rick Nash is a beast.

Sponge Bong Beer Pants
10-14-2008, 10:43 PM
Oops, I guess I spoke too soon... Cheech is seeing some solid playing time with Big Joe and Patty on the PP.

Dang, Milan and Lil Joe are really building some chemistry on that 2nd line too.

4-0. First time ever in Sharks history.

Great way to start the season with a new coaching staff :)

Patty with a pair of goals tonight... love it.

This feels like it's going to be a real special year...

Go Sharks Go!

Anyone know why Cheechoo is only logging 13 minutes / game?

He scoring like he used to. I thought he'd be playing with Thornton. What's going on with the SJ lines?

StrongArmSu
10-15-2008, 11:46 AM
First line is Marleau Thornton Guchi

Other than that, i think its a bit of a mix.

SJ is a bit screwed up right now....the only players that are guaranteed top minutes are Joe, Marleau, Boyle, and Blake.... Setoguchi, Michalek, Clowe, Cheechoo are all getting random minutes

Because Cheechoo sucks and was only benefitting from getting saucer passes that you or I could pot in from big Joe. I expect Cheechoo to stay an average player at best the rest of his career.

I agree, somewhat, but I think Cheech could return to somewhat respectable form this year and could push for 40 goals.. especially if he gets time along side Joe and Patty on the PP.

Kinda, I guess you can assume that the lines are working themselves out.. new coaching staff, you have to expect a bit of a mixture.. however, the Sharks are 4-0 for the first time in their young franchise and they have been scoring goals. I really love that top line of Thornton, Marleau, and Gooch though. I really hope it sticks. Gooch could easily have a season like Cheech did a few years back when Thornton first came to SJ and he helped Jonathon net 50 goals.

You probably realized it already but earlier I merged the "San Jose Sharks" thread, which was previously known as the Kyle McClaren isn't wanted anymore thread, into the Pacific Division thread that I started up last week. hahaha Thornton and S.Montador of the Ducks got into a "fight" tonight. They danced around doing the huggy bear dance mostly, Thornton looked like a giant next to Montador though. None too exciting but Joe did get a couple of punches in. They both looked unamused during the altercation but it was good to see Joe fired up and willing to go. Thornton got 5 and an extra 2 for cross checking. Oops :D

if it's the team in front of him care to explain Nabby's last 3 games? He has allowed something like 18/29 goals in his past 3/4... and his save percentage is down right atrocious. :D

It is a great team in front of any SJ goaltender and that team just getting their stride and learning a new system but I do believe that Boucher is very often under-rated..

Not that I think Boucher has a shot of stealing the # 1 in any way, but Nabby best get his act together quick.. he is clearly in a bit of a rut and he is hurting my fantasy teams damn it! hahaha

Hey, I hear ya. New system... new coaches.. it's gonna take some time. Nabby will come around.

Pens/Sharks on Tuesday... you going Marty? Anybody else in the area gonna head down for that one? Always a great affair between Pitts/SJ. Shootout is common between these teams! It's one of the few hockey games I will get to make this year so I am hella fired up. Last time I saw the Pens was in Pittsburgh... game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Meh.

remember those old school jerseys that were half & half split down the middle? Half home colours, half away colours. You need a half Pens jersey, half Sharks jersey. Sure they'd look terrible but it makes your decision on what jersey to wear easier :D

what a well oiled machine we have right now 9-2 and a nice 6-0 at home so far after they struggled here last year. the top line especially thornton has been unstoppable controlling the play throughout the entire 60 minutes in games. awesome to watch, penalty kill also had a few more great scoring chances tonight again.

11-02-2008, 10:31 PM
damn, back and forth with the Avs tonight but the team gets out of there w/ another W, 10th on the year, as they continue to spread around the wealth.. two assists for the Captain, two goals for Gooch tonight, two for Milan, and Mr on Fire Ryan Clowe pots his 5th goal in his last 6 games. This is a really fun team to watch right now. I realize the season is still virginal but I totally love what McLellan and the new coaching staff has injected into this Sharks team. Winger Devin Setoguchi (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/players/3785/) has 12 points for the first-place San Jose Sharks (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/teams/san/). I knew SJ would come gunning out of the gate this season but holy shit. I can't believe we can count the amount of losses this team has faced on one fucking hand. :D

That top line is so sick.. and Ryan Clowe?? Career year and playing for that contract fo sho! Hell of a season he is having playing along Lil Joe on that 2nd line. It's damned nice to see that we've got two very solid lines and probably the best defensive corps in the entire league pitching in points night in and night out.

SJ is tight under the cap right now but I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade Cheech by the deadline in order to get the space to sign Clowe long term. Another 3 assists for Ryan tonight.

SJ ties the Montreal Canadians 65 year old record for the best start thru 25 games in NHL history.

43 pts in 25 games

5 goals, another shortie, Thornton is coming alive and the Sharks D continues to pile up the points.

8 game win streak I do believe..

This one against Ronnie Wilson, Tosk, and the rest of the Maple Leafs was pretty much over in the first.

When they look this good and I dont' clean snow off my car daily then talk about Cup picks....till then it's forever speculation. Don't get me wrong though...there a clear contender, but its annoying when people proclaim a Stanley Cup Winner this early.

San Jose looks great. More power too them, but it's a long season and plenty of things can still go wrong.

Pretty impressive showing by SJ so far! I think the Wings were on a similar pace to break those same records around this time last season (I think it was discussed in the Wings thread actually). They ended up slowing down in the 2nd half with injuries and whatnot, and didn't end up breaking the record, but we all know how it turned out in the end... good sign for SJ!

Nicely said and I agree entirely. I'm pretty sure that SJ knows it, too. This team knows their measure of success will be on how they fair in the playoffs. This is a "young" but veteran team, especially this season with additions of Blake/Boyle. The core players in SJ have suffered through plenty of hot streaks and playoff disappointments to know better than to be ordering their division/conference/stanley cup championship gear already, and I really do believe that Coach McLellan will also serve as a great anchor and not allow this team to get ahead of themselves. LOVE this guy btw, thanks to Detroit for giving him up!!! :D

Anyway, no way anyone in SJ is etching any names on the cup yet, that's for sure.

On an ironic/funny side of this, that 65 year old Habs record that the Sharks tied for best start to a season with 43pts in 25 games -- The Canadians went on to win it all that season  (sorry I had to)

I can't speak for last season but I do believe I saw the 01/02 Red Wings mentioned as getting extremely close to tying that record.. 41/42 points or something like that. My numbers/season may be off here a little but I know it a team in recent Wings history that was damned close.

Everyone we needed to step up tonight stepped up. What a sick ass game... such solid never say die performances by both teams.

Did any of you guys see when Seto got interviewed in the first period and he said something like Ohh we have to cover every inch we are playing the best team in the league, and then Joe Thornton leans over and laughs and is like Seto, WE ARE THE BEST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE.

Classic.

Little too proud considering they lost no? Pride....one of the seven deadly sins....Well what was the original question he was asked? Anyways can you blame him the Sharks did dominate that game. Even the first period when they were down 3-0 they played great. Plihal really screwed the Sharks on that last goal in the first though. Yeah it sucks they lost and didnt even get a point but if your going to lose a game i would have it be like that with the Sharks playing really well and the opposing goalie just having a great night.

A tough win in Calgary tonight. I'm glad we won't be seeing these guys in the first round. Good night for the Sharks though. Boyle and Cheech get off the schnide and Nabby had a hell of a game. It's good to see the team get it done without Patty or Blake on the ice.

And congrats to Coach McLellan. Pretty sure that this makes him the 4th rookie head coach in NHL history to win 50 games and the first since Pat Burns did it with Montreal in 88/89

111 pts and a 4 pt lead on Detroit with a game in hand and 6 games to go.

It's been a while. I just thought I'd mention those couple of things. :D

SJ has been awesome this year! Mad props to them! I don't see the Wings catching them, and it will certainly be an epic series if/when these two teams meet in the WCF, and assuming SJ does finish 1st overall, I might have to give them the edge based on goaltending and home ice advantage.

That said, SJ IS up by 4 pts in the standings, but they don't have a game in hand. The game they had in hand was last night's game (at least according to TSN, they've both played the same number of gms), so it's not quite completely out of reach for the Wings just yet (although it's not looking good, especially given how lousy they've been recently).

Great job this season SJ.... A presidents banner isn't what this team or it's fans are really after but we'll take it for now. Hopefully this is just an appetizer of things to come. Hell of a job by Wilson bringing in an outstanding new coach and guys like Blake and Boyle. This guy doesn't get enough credit for being a top notch GM.

Now it's time to put this regular season behind us and get on with shaking some of those ever familiar playoff demons. The team has gotten healthy at the right time and this has to be the year they push it to the limit... right? Right?? RIGHT!?!

...but what the fuck was that by the Sharks until the 3rd period? Holy shit, that was truly among the two worst periods of hockey I have seen from any team this entire season, espicially the first. The Sharks somehow got out of that 4-2 and the third was definitely an amazing show. But wow, if I'm the fan of a team that has the reputation in the NHL for being playoff chokes, and had to sit and watch the team start their game with those two periods this late in the season, I'm hugely alarmed.

But kudos to the Sharks for not going away quitely after that overwhelming first two periods. I must say I'm guilty of turning this one off before it was over.

Seriously, no joke, I agree with you 100%, but I think a lot of the terrible play in the 1st and 2nd periods equates to most of the team playing like 3 games in a 3 week span (minus the Olympic participants) Obviously I don't wanna make excuses and had they lost I wouldn't be using it, but I figure it had to play a bit of a factor in the terribly slow start to this game ?

Nabster had a great game tonight, despite 5 goals against. SJ needs him at his best if they plan to get anywhere in the post season (obviously)

That being said -- The Sharks made history tonight by being the only team in NHL history to come back and win 3 consecutive games when trailing after 2 periods. Interesting accomplishment and I do love the no quit attitude.

Aside from it all -- As a Sharks fan... we are always alarmed about the playoffs :( Every year they are one of the top teams who are expected to at the very least get to the conference finals and every year they struggle, show up too late, and bow out early.

I love the statement the team made tonight though -- gotta take this and the last few games as a confidence builder right? A mentality that suggests the team believes they are never out of a game, despite the score.

If they could only put together that type of 3rd period play for an entire game... they could be unstoppable. :\

I disagree. Its way easier to have a horrible season when you expect it than to constantly get teased with cup chances and never come close. Year in and year out SJ should be favorites yet they never, ever show it when it matters. The Wings were one of the most criticized teams in the league until they won a cup in 08 after a half-decade of playoff busts. It didn't matter than they were winning presidents, you have to play up the standards you set for yourself with your play in the regular season and the roster you have on paper. The Wings were constantly the best season team but one of the worst playoff teams for a good stretch. SJ on paper is a top 3 team in this league, they have spent the last half-decade dominating the regular season, so they don't get to make the playoffs and be happy, they can only be happy with a cup (or at least comming close, conferrence finals even would be a godsend to the SJ fanbase).

On the flip side, what Leafs fan starts the season even thinking a cup is possible that year? They get to be happy with any semi-decent performance they see from their club because they know its rebuilding and they see a promising future. They have virtually no standards. SJ fans have to have the top standards in the league because they're constantly on top of the league and they are constantly dissapointed based on that standard.

You can't say fans of teams who miss the playoffs have it worse, its not remotely that simple. Call it spoiled or whatever you want, the fact is fans of every team set a standard at the beginning of the season. I guarentee you Chicago fans ended last season on a way, way higher note than Red Wings fans because Chicago fans just wanted the team to progress (And obviously they did much more than that). Your happiness as a fan is directly relative to how your team meets (or fails to meet) that standard that year. Boston and Carolina are the only other two teams in the league with fanbases as dissapointed as SJ fans are relative to their standards (Carolina moreso than Boston). No other team dissapoints their fanbase as much year in and year out because the bottom feeder teams are fairly easy to predict. Unless you're that dumb fuck who really though the Leafs had a chance to win a cup this year, theres nothing really dissapointing about the Leafs season (Quite the opposite, I'd be happy as a Leafs fan right now). SJ right now is enormously dissapointing and making their fanbase recollect playoff flops of recent past.

I disagree. Its way easier to have a horrible season when you expect it than to constantly get teased with cup chances and never come close. Theres no pride in cheering for a team who makes the playoffs regularly. No one cares if you don't make the cup. Year in and year out SJ should be favorites yet they never, ever show it when it matters. The Wings were one of the most criticized teams in the league until they won a cup in 08 after a half-decade of playoff busts. You can't just say "You guys are near the top in the league, be happy." They have a roster way too good to ever even possibly miss the playoffs. It doesn't change the fact that as a fan, what they are dealing with right now is more miserable than what fans of most teams in the leagu ever deal with because they have virtually no excuses to be playing this poorly yet somehow they've become half the team they were the first 5 months of the season. When you have a team constantly competing for presidents that has never seen the Western Conferrence Finals, and with 12 games left of the season are on a horrific, embarassing 4 game losing streak featuring some of the most indifferent play (As in, they just don't seem to give a fuck) I've ever seen, its cause for great concern.

You can't say fans of teams who miss the playoffs have it worse, its not remotely that simple.

Well said Kyle...

Edit: Also, I really thought that incredible 3rd period massacre against the Preds really would have helped this team turn a corner for the better... kind've wake them up in regards to what it takes to win. That 3rd period was incredible and yet all it seems to have done is make them play worse and even less consistent than they already had been.

Yeah, I thought so too. Yesterday deceptively looks like a good third period but in reality Calgary literally handed them a fluke goal (I forgot who but one of Calgary's rookies tried to stuff the puck to Kipper to freeze it and Kipper was not expecting it and let it through to a surprised SJ stick) and in reality it took 18 minutes into that period for SJ to actually produce a goal. The 4-3 score is misleading, it was a really really embarassing game, espicially that first period. But maybe they're dumping off their poor playoff hockey now and will get it together in the next 11, who knows?

Even though they have underperformed the last few years in the playoffs its not like they have already been eliminated this year. The last few years the Sharks are usually on fire right now in the year and then hit a rough patch and dont play well in the playoffs. Hopefully thats just happening now and they can get there shit together before the playoffs start. The last handful of games have been awful but I still have faith that they can win when the playoffs do start. Hopefully we can see some strong play soon leading right into the playoffs.

Fuck yes teams who constantly miss the playoffs have it worse. Playoff hockey is so much more entertaining and exhilarating than regular season. Seeing your team win a playoff game is in no way close to seeing your team outperform their expectations but still miss the playoffs.
Saying you have hope for the future and all that crap is nice, but it still means you've watched your team lose more then they win and i don't care what your expectations are, seeing that is shit. Seeing that year after year (even more so then the Leafs who have at least seen a few playoff wins in the past 10 seasons, teams like Atlanta, Columbus, Florida) is way worse then getting to watch your team win most nights in the regular season and win a few playoff games even if they don't make it to the cup. I'd easily take 10 years of my team making the playoffs and being out in the first 2 rounds then 10 years of finishing bottom 10 with 1 playoff showing.
You definitely are taking shit for granted and are spoiled if you think a team who is in the top 5 of the league is having a disappointing season.

You're generalizing every hockey fan as having an equal standard for their team and equating success to games won. I disagree with that mindset. You're trying to make the situation seem too matter-of-fact about the wins, but its not about whats the most logical (Which logic would obviously say success=win total which is basically what you're saying). Again, the point isn't whos having the overall more successful season, its who has a more dissapointed fanbase. If the SJ makes a first round exit I guarentee you their fans will be tons and tons more dissapointed with the season behind them than Leafs fans.

Call it what you want to call it, that they're unappreciative, take shit for granted, etc. Who cares? The point is as a fanbase they get more upset over the season behind them than a team that missed the playoffs but at least made positive steps towards their future. It doesn't matter that logically they should be happy.

As a Lions fan I was extremely happy with this season because Stafford seems like such a solid franchise QB and thats more good news than I ever imagined getting from the Lions this year. Standards exist and they're unique for every single team in all of sports, you can't compare a Leafs fan' standards to a Sharks fan's.

boredguy
03-20-2010, 08:01 PM
I'm certainly not generalizing like that, or thinking that teams/fans have equal standards or expectations. I'd expect Wings or Bruins fans to be disappointed in this season because they're squeaking into the playoffs. If the Sharks were 7th in the West after going on long losing streaks i could see them being unhappy.
To say you'd be happier cheering for a team that's always finishing last instead of a team that's constantly making the playoffs because they go on a small losing streak is just stupid, whiny, spoiled, unappreciative and taking shit for granted.
Honestly, by this time i'd figure Sharks fans would learn that regular season doesn't mean much as long as you get into the playoffs (the important thing, the thing that bottom teams don't do). It's what you do there that matters. So boohooing about a losing streak during the regular season while still having a record that gets them home ice through most of the playoffs gets no sympathy from me. Now if the Sharks lose in the 1st round again, i can see Sharks fans being mad, pissed off and disappointed and it'd make some sense.

They havent done that this year ...Yet:lol: Honestly im a disappointed Leafs fan but also a closet Sharks fan (ever since Ozzy gave away that puck:p) just look at my fantasy team...7 Sharks and in playoff contention. A little crappy as of late but to be disappointed in that would mean im disappointed im in the playoffs.....thats absurd.

The fact is the Sharks put a top notch product on the ice year in year out.....if you dont like that than you shouldnt be a fan. We all want our team to win the cup but the fact is only one does so its not that critical imo Ill use AO shaking Crosbys hand as an example...hes never won the big game but that doesnt mean his fans think hes having a disappointing career...does it?

And yet again, no one is saying that, or even close. We're saying it must be painful to watch a team play like this only 11 games away from the postseason after 4-6 (I lose track of this shit) consecutive years of performing very well in the regular season and busting early in the playoffs. I don't know why you keep trying to turn that into anyone being mad just over losing 4 games. If SJ doesn't bust 4-6 years in a row I don't think anyone says its painful being a Sharks fan right now

I've never been a big fan of Wilson and I think a lot of the early exits were bad coaching and player utilization, how long has the new coaching been in place at SJ? My impression of SJ is they have high power offense but when it comes to tightly checked playoff hockey where the room goes away they get outworked. I think SJ has a good chance at going deep each year, they just need to tighten up the little things, but aren't Michalik and Bernier examples of those players and they got sent out of town? I guess SJ is not a team I know a lot about but but still I wouldn't go as far as to hope for a matchup against them. They are a sleeping giant palyoff wise. This is also the first Cheechoo-less SJ in a long time and that could mean something.

Backing it up by saying it's as bad as being a bottom dwelling team? I like Sponge and all but that's some retarded shit.

Dude, you know you are coming across a little bit like an asshole over this. I really don't appreciate being referred to as spoiled, whiny, and any other garbage you threw out there because of my statement. You act as if I am soooo spoiled and have never sat through a ton of shit years with my teams, either. I know what it is like to be a fan of a bottom dweller and I know the rewards a team can get for it. The Pens wouldn't be what they are today had they not scratched the bottom of the barrel for many years. Which is kind've where I was going with my comment when I said sometimes I'd rather be cheering for a shit team.

You can think what you want about it, we're all entitled to our opinions but gimme a break. Truth is -- it can be very painful to be a Sharks fan and I meant what I said. Take it how ever you want it but when your team constantly builds you up and then repeatedly lets you down and breaks your heart, year, after year, after year -- it hurts. They have some of the best talent in the world and when the time comes to get it done they continually fall apart and play below the standards they set for themselves and for the very loyal fan base that follows them. Pardon me for being scared that is going to happen again.

Hell, to be perfectly honest with you, I don't even need a Stanley Cup in SJ. I just celebrated NFL/NHL championships in the same season. I'm pretty content. As much as I would love to see it happen, it isn't really even about that. I just wanna see this fucking team play to their god damned abilities when it really matters. To give 100% when it really matters. Not fall behind 3 games to 0 and then wake up and start playing like they care. Or blow some very important leads late in the 3rd period and have a series they had all but wrapped up stripped from them b/c they couldn't hang on in the final minutes. Or be embarrassed by and ousted in the first round by a team they really should have been able to beat. And on and on and on it goes.

My comment sincerely had very little to do with the poor play the last 5 games (all teams go through slumps). It had everything to do with this type of play reminding me (and others) of those repeated playoff flops and disappointments and as much as it pains me to say -- the very realistic fact that looking like they do right now, I will not be shocked or surprised in any way to see a disinterested Sharks team ousted in the first or second round, yet again. I fucking hate thinking that but even you made a joking statement about me not being able to complain until they get ousted early again. Everyone knows Jumbo and companies reputation.

I am certainly not comparing my situation to other teams fans or saying we have it worse in any way, I'm certainly not looking for any pity party either. I love my team in teal and I am one of the most loyal and appreciative fans you will ever come across but I will call it like it is. Am I gonna be there until the bitter or sweet end? Loving every last second and every last drop of playoff puck that I get? Hell fucking yes I am. So I certainly am/was not looking for any type of sympathy or pity or anything man. Fuck, I was just venting some very real frustration about a team I absolutely love. You have jumped way far over board with that one and I really don't know why.

boredguy
03-21-2010, 06:45 AM
Sorry Sponge, i definitely wasn't trying to attack you, the comments started out in jest. Kyle tends to get people riled up though :p I meant most of what i said in general and not specifically at you.

I do think you're way off on thinking a bottom team is better to follow then a team that does well in the regular season but not as well in the playoffs. Hoping your team loses so they get a better playoff pick is a shit feeling and that lasts for months to years and even then it's just to get the hope of being better and getting into a spot where teams like the Sharks are at now. Most of those teams don't get to draft players like Malkin either, or get handed Sid in a worked lottery :p

I do think you're a bit spoiled though, you've gotten to watch your team win playoff games and 5 series in the past 5 years, which i'm sure has brought you lots of joy. Seen them play dominant hockey where they seem to be on another level then pretty much the rest of the league, most fans will never get to see their team do that, even if it's just regular season. While i'm sure that feels commonplace now, you shouldn't take it for granted and should still be enjoying it. I'm sure they've made you happy more then mad, sad or disappointed so it's hard to imagine it being that painful if you're a Leafs fan or Isles or Panthers or Thrashers or Blues or Kings or Coyotes or Blue Jackets or Wild or Predators.

I am a woman after all :p

Anyway, I absolutely see what you are saying. I know that I most fortunate and believe me I do appreciate and love my teams. All 3 of them. The repeated let downs with SJ do become frustrating and do hurt and I'm not gonna retract my statement and say otherwise but I guess in the big scheme of things the build up makes it worth it. The fact that I can buy a playoff hockey ticket and score a free pom pom or a towel makes it all worth it. Ok well, let's see if I am saying the same thing in another month or two. :scared:

Anyhow, I hope the boys can get their shit together before the end of the regular season, especially Nabster. I know our D has been laying him out to dry but fuck he was very shaky in his last Olympic game and that lack of confidence/ability has seriously trickled over. He's had a few spot on performances but overall he's let up 26 goals in his last 8 starts since the break. Not lookin very Nabby like right now.. as his GAA is up by over a goal I believe. You almost forget that the guy is in a contract year and an early out or post season flop makes me wonder about his future with the Sharks. Either way, SJ is gonna need this guy at his very best if they wanna do any damage in the West.

Grats to Selanne. Always liked him. Neat to see him get 599 against an old team in SJ and 600 against an old team in Colorado. It should also be noted he became only the 18th NHL player to reach 600 goals.

Doan suspended for 3 games. We've probably seen worse hits get fewer/no suspension this season already. I'm pretty sure the league just spins a wheel with various punishments on it and doesn't bother looking at what actually happened.

Video of the hit:

That is surprising that that hit would provoke the harshest suspension of the year. I can see how it could warrant a suspension, but it certainly wasn't worse than Hjalmarsson's, IMO.

Hope this all pays off for him & the Sharks in the end. Stanley Cup please.

Jumbo Joe has really impressed me early on. I mean, duh, the guy is a monster, but he is really flying out there. He deserves that C, for sure. Not only is he putting up goals and points early but he has really improved his defensive game over the last couple of seasons. He can back check with the best of them. Awesome. He definitely ranks up there with my favorite guys to watch play.

Nitty looks pretty solid out there when given a chance.

So what do we think of the Thornton hit?

YouTube - Joe Thornton hits David Perron; Logan Couture vs Alex Pietrangelo Nov 4, 2010

Doesn't really look blindside, Perron was looking for the puck and not looking ahead. It's not an elbow or charging. I don't think there should be any further punishment if it was just this but...
I think his hit before that where he got penalized for boarding was probably dirtier but i can't find video of it. Thornton nailed a guy from behind into the boards. With him just getting out of the box from that penalty there might be a suspension.

Heater actually also had a pretty nasty boarding call later on as well.

48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A lateral or blind side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principle point of contact is not permitted.Perron was looking the other way and Thornton was coming out of the box. Principal point of contact was shoulder to head. Seems to be a pretty clear-cut example of the type of hit the league is trying to reduce.

No way should he be suspended. Perron should be aware that the penalty was expiring and kept his head up.

I agree, but the league's position seems to be that Joe should have been aware that the player was in a vulnerable position and should not have made contact with his head. There's nothing in the rule that limits it to intentional head shots... all that matters is that the hitee doesn't see it coming and primary contact is made to the head.

But yeah, this doesn't seem egregious so I hope there isn't a suspension coming.

Agreed. Quick had a heavy season last year and he tired down the stretch. That's all it was. He was tired. At health and prime I think he and Bernier are def. equals. I think a ton of fantasy ppl, esp around here, were so high on Bernier coming into this season b/c of Quick stuttering down the stretch last season. A what have you done for me lately mentality. Bernier is a future # 1 no doubt but Quick is no slouch. I think a lot of ppl forgot how golden he was for most of the year. I've got Quick in a dynasty and have had little to no doubt that he would handle the reigns for at least one more year in LA. He's money.

Also just to note, i think 5 games should be the minimum on clear elbows to the head and go up if it looks intentional. Hopefully they do go through with upping it next season like they've been talking about at the gm meetings.

For this season expecting them to up the amount of games on similar incidents just isn't gonna happen. Add in the unofficial league policy of being more lenient on superstars and you have why it got less than Volchenkov.

If you 'hate to bring it up', then I'm just curious why you did, considering it's a completely irrelevant and unrelated point? Yes, he got leniency in both cases but aside from that, you can't compare the two situations as they're completely different and unrelated. I just don't think it's a very valid point you're trying to make by bringing that situation up when it has no relevance to the current topic at hand, especially when you start your post with something like 'I hate to bring this up'.

He got leniency in a court of law because it was an accident, he was sincerely remorseful and the Snyder family forgave him, I don't think luck had anything to do with it. He got leniency by the NHL for the current incident because - and only because - he's a superstar hitting a known pest and we all know how the NHL caters them (the superstars) every chance they get when ruling on stuff like this, especially when the other party involved is a known shit disturber. Again, I don't think luck has much to do with it. You can't compare a ruling in a court of law to the NHL's wishy washy dart-board style disciplinary system and then say he's lucky.

Never reached the level of his insane rookie year again but aside from the one year in Colorado where he was awful and a couple of years of being average in SJ he's been pretty consistently one of the top players in the game. It's too bad he's become a bit injury prone in his old age.
