NEW ORLEANS (AP)—The New Orleans Saints (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/nor/;_ylt=Am9L2jkwev3ibMVj5RZ3uDcdsLYF) made another move toward strengthening their linebacker corps, signing former Carolina Panthers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/car/;_ylt=AvfCUQ.MS7m5ifXhfGCMfekdsLYF) player Dan Morgan (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/5458/;_ylt=AngKkPjh5bK5C7FMNeQDT.gdsLYF).
A team spokesman confirmed the signing but did not disclose the terms of the contract. Morgan’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did not want to discuss the contract with the media, a person answering the phone in his office said Friday.
The 29-year-old Morgan, made the Pro Bowl after the 2004 season but was sidelined by serious injuries for most of the past two seasons before his release from Carolina.

I like this move for the Saints. They needed some "D" help.

Anyone liking the saints to do anything this year?? Last year was a real heartbreaker. Any thoughts on what Bush might do this year?

The Saints. Eh... I think they will be a middle of the pack team. I think they will be in a playoff race, not sure if they get in though. Reggie Bush needs a true #1 back in the game to make his game effective. I really don't like McAllister, but if he is in to carry the load, Bush can be effective taking passes out of the backfield. I do like that the Saints have been attempting to fix their defense. That unit had some issues last season. The games that Brees and co. would put together a solid game would often times collapse on the other side of the ball. I'll say 9-7.

I think that they could be solid if for no other reason than health and a shitty division.

Agreed, I think they have a pretty good team, who just had a tough, tough season this past season, nothing went there way.

A running back not named McAllister or Bush...

Running back Pierre Thomas (http://www.footballguys.com/ThomPi00-1.php) continues to fly under the radar. With all eyes on McAllister and the mercurial Reggie Bush (http://www.footballguys.com/BushRe00-1.php), Thomas continues to chug along. His progress might be the main reason the front office hasn't made a move for a big-name veteran free agent. The second-year back from Illinois has gained the confidence of the staff that he can carry the load if needed.

At this point, I wouldn't be too excited, but I wouldn't dismiss him either. His game is going to be conditional on McAllister's health. If Deuce can stay healthy, you won't see Pierre. If he can't - and it is certainly not out of the question - Pierre Thomas will slide right in and be productive!

Saints WR Devery Henderson (http://www.footballguys.com/HendDe00-1.php) is not only fighting off WR Robert Meachem, but he's been taking snaps along side WR Marques Colston (http://www.footballguys.com/ColsMa00-1.php) with the first team. "I see him fighting more for playing time," HC Sean Payton said of Henderson. ".... So when you look at Marques (Colston) and you look at Devery, those guys are right now lining up with the first group. Devery's competing against those other guys behind him. Lance Moore (http://www.footballguys.com/MoorLa00-1.php), Robert Meachem, those guys are wanting to get more snaps." Payton said that he'd like to get Meachem more time with QB Drew Brees (http://www.footballguys.com/BreeDr00-1.php), but that's something Meachem has to earn.

Right now, outside of Colston, I wouldn't take a Saints receiver earlier than a 12th round or so. Devery Henderson is good not great. Meachem is good not great. Don't see either of those guys being more productive than a WR3.

IDP leagues and defense watch...

Saints Head Coach Sean Payton Thursday said LB Jonathan Vilma is continuing to make progress in his recovery from the season-ending knee injury he suffered with the New York Jets in 2007. Payton said, "He's close to being 100 percent. There hasn't been any real setbacks. He had some swelling and soreness early in camp but he's feeling good. That's encouraging."

Good...great news for New Orleans if he can come back to pre-injury form.

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston (http://www.footballguys.com/ColsMa00-1.php) was hit hard in the first quarter of the preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals and left the game with what the team said was bruised ribs. X-rays were negative. The much-anticipated first game of tight end Jeremy Shockey (http://www.footballguys.com/ShocJe00-1.php) was put off for at least a week when right before kickoff the team said they wanted to give him a little more time before getting him out on the field. Running back Reggie Bush (http://www.footballguys.com/BushRe00-1.php) left the game with an injury in the first half, which Saints Coach Sean Payton called a "Charley Horse."

Should be nothing to really worry about, just a little something to pay attention to.

For the second week in a row, TE Jeremy Shockey (http://www.footballguys.com/ShocJe00-1.php) was a late scratch from the Saints' lineup for Thursday night's preseason finale against Miami. It is speculated that Head Coach Sean Payton is remaining cautious with Shockey recovering from last season's leg injury.

Week 4 of the pre-season is the most meaningless game of football of them all, so Shockey missing it is no big deal. However, it would have been nice to see Shockey play at full speed. With that said, it is safe to assume he will be ready for week 1.

King_Killah
08-30-2008, 11:59 PM
More on Shitkey.....I mean Shockey...

New Orleans Saints TE Jeremy Shockey (http://www.footballguys.com/ShocJe00-1.php) was on the sideline last night, dressed in a uniform. His debut did not happen though, and he will have to wait for Week 1 of the regular season. "I can't call it 100 percent yet, because if he was 100 percent I would have played him," HC Sean Payton said. "But I think by Monday he's going to be 100 percent, and I feel like we're getting enough work from him during the work week with the quarterback."

Overall it sounds like positive news for New Orleans and Shockey.

I am constantly seeing this Gramatica guy a FA.....I wonder if he will actually play a full season in the dome?
Any info on this guy in NO? All Im sure of is he hasnt kicked many balls over the past few years. He does like the long ones however (50yds+) and ideally the conditions should be good in the dome.

King_Killah
09-01-2008, 10:50 AM
Gramatica actually isn't that great... The only thing positive is he is in a dome - barring another hurricane catastrophe down their.

Dubz
09-01-2008, 12:58 PM
Fantasy Analysis Gramatica is worth taking as a starting option with a late-round pick at this point because the Saints offense should be explosive and he kicks indoors. If anything, this makes Gramatica a viable option off the waiver wire during bye weeks.
(Updated 08/30/2008).

Options

Hanson
Longwell
Suishum
Stover
Casey
Elam
Janakowski
Mare

Im going to gamble on Gramatica for a few weeks. His bye isnt until week 9 too which is another plus.

King_Killah
09-02-2008, 05:17 AM
Once again though, Gramatica is a kicker... every team needs ones, so if you can get one that is in a dome 50% of the time, why not.

Mike Triplet of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that he thinks RB Pierre Thomas (http://www.footballguys.com/ThomPi00-1.php) will wind up leading the Saints in carries this year.
Coach Sean Payton talked about RB depth earlier this year. "I just think you can never have enough of 'em," Payton said. "So you stack 'em up, and it's a long season, and it's a position obviously that takes a pounding. So obviously you want to have depth there, and versatility and flexibility and all those things. But it's certainly a position that you see year in and year out get nicked and get sidelined because of the pounding you take.

Of course it is waaay to early to speculate, but I can see Thomas taking the load as well. Things to pay attention to as we get closer!

King_Killah
05-07-2009, 08:03 PM
Steve Wyche, of NFL.com, reports New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said the team has had internal discussions about the possibility of signing unrestricted free-agent RB Edgerrin James (http://www.footballguys.com/JameEd00-1.php) (Cardinals). The Saints likely will re-visit the talks after their upcoming minicamp.

This could change the scenario of Thomas taking the load.

King_Killah
05-18-2009, 01:48 PM
Brett Martel, of the Associated Press, reports free-agent RB Deuce McAllister (http://www.footballguys.com/McAlDe00-1.php) (Saints) said he would not rule out re-signing with the New Orleans Saints. McAllister said returning to New Orleans would be a dream come true. ..."But if it's on a visiting team, then so be it. All that will play itself out."

Well...the Saints are looking for a back-up. Right now they have RBs Mike Bell, Lynell Hamilton, P.J. Hill, and Herb Donaldson all competing for the reserve power back role. Bell is remembered for his time in Denver, but is limited. Hamilton came onto the scene at San Diego State but injuries kept him off the field. PJ Hill = Poorman's LenDale White. Donaldson is big and quick and can roll throw arm tackles but is unproven receiving out of the backfield.

King_Killah
05-25-2009, 04:30 PM
Sources on the scene tell TMZ Shockey was at a pool party at the Hard Rock Hotel -- when he was found unconscious at around 2:00 PM. Paramedics ended up wheeling Shockey out of the Hard Rock via stretcher. We're told the paramedics tried to cover Shockey up so onlookers -- including a TV camera crew -- couldn't ID him.
TMZ reports they later talked to a rep for the New Orleans Saints, who told them Shockey was just "dehydrated" and that he'll be "fine."

This is no big deal... Just something to talk about.

Brian Allee-Walsh, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints RB Pierre Thomas (http://www.footballguys.com/ThomPi00-1.php) (wrist) suffered a bruised left wrist during the team's practice Saturday, June 6.

Same wrist that Thomas disloacted last season and needed surgery on. Good news is that he only missed a couple of snaps and was right back out there. Saints are looking at the injury and have talked to Edgerrin James. Keep an eye out.

The Monroe News-Star reports New Orleans Saints RB Mike Bell (http://subscribers.footballguys.com/players/BellMi00-1.php) will be the team's No. 3 running back this season that could be able to start if needed.

Pierre Thomas looks as if he will be the lead back. New Orleans is looking for a strong back to be behind Thomas and Bush. The Saints other options are Lynell Hamilton, Herb Donaldson, and PJ Hill. Not surprised at this news of Bell being the #3 here.

The Monroe News-Star reports New Orleans Saints QB Mark Brunell (http://subscribers.footballguys.com/players/BrunMa00-1.php) and QB Joey Harrington likely will compete for the primary backup quarterback job during training camp.

Early indication is that Harrington has failed to impress being the #3 QB, but how much does Brunell have left in the tank?

Does Drew Bree's come off as a fake class act whenever hes on camera to anyone else? I don't mind the guy at all but holy shit turn down the big ol' smiles and polite gestures man, be a fucking football player. I think its an act because the dudes fucking fierce on the field. But then so is Tim Tebow and hes the most legit class act of the century.

What made me think of this was this special on NFL Network about Brees meeting this famous New Orlean's pianist. Brees just seemed so generic and unnatural the whole time while the pianist couldn't have been more cool.

No. That's Drew Brees. He doesn't just donate his money to people and organizations, he donates an amazing amount of time. He's a top class guy and he really shows it on and off the field.

I'm gonna run with this line of thought a bit.

Thats was pretty much my chief complaint with Drew Brees. Every single piece of footage of him or recording of him talking is completely made for TV. Its not him personally, cause hes actually a legit class-act (Truly one of the few in this world). But just about everything outside of gametime that involves Drew Brees is barf-worthy (In the context you used it). If hes on NFL network hes gonna go on for 30 mins about rebuilding NO and how special it all is and how amazing it all is and how the city means everything and blah blah. Hes all tradition, he was chosen for NO, hes honored the people support him, hes honored to be a part of something bigger than him, etc. etc. Its sincere and its sweet but its a far cry from the entertainment most seek out of football and it definitely got way annoying by the end of the playoffs. Good for you NO, but I'm really glad I can go back to hearing football coverage instead of New Orleans coverage on NFL network.

I know this is almost completely unrelated to what Billin said. As I said, I was just running with the same train of thought.

And I do agree the second video is unnecessary nonsense. Did those few minutes truly need a montage? The live footage isn't good enough?

I can't believe Brees won't sign the latest offer. If he signs the deal, it makes him the highest paid QB (player??) in the league. The Saints are offering him $19.25 and he wants $20.5. What a joke.

Both sides are working from a framework of five years. The difference in the annual average pay is about $1.25 million, with the Saints' last offer at about $19.25 million and Brees' last proposal at about $20.5 million.

I like the joke at the ESPY's... Brees should sign the deal and he could get that extra money from some "anonymous" Bounty!!

The New Orleans Saints........ Alright, I give a pass for last season with all the BS that happened over there in New Orleans.

With the coaching staff back fully intact, the team should be better than what they showed last year... That said though...even through all the turmoil their offense was still pretty solid last year. The defense crumbled and cost that team a lot of games.

The Saints offense still has Drew Brees at QB. Lord help the team if he were to go down with an injury because the back-ups are Luke McCown(really, he is still in the NFL) and Seneca Wallace. The Saints have Thomas, Ingram, and Sproles to tote the rock. Personally, I don't like the three-headed attack, but all three when healthy are capable. The receivers are a solid group anchored by Colston and Graham(TE). Lance Moore can make plays. A name, I expect to emerge this season is Nick Toon. Yes, the son of the great Al Toon. Put up solid numbers each and every year at Wisconsin and almost hitting a grand in his senior year while chipping in 10 TDs. He has now had a year to sit, watch, and learn. I expect him to come out of the camps with a starting job on the Saints and I expect him to make appearances of people's fantasy teams.

The draft...... not so exciting for the Saints with only 5 picks. But they open their draft by taking Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro. Like I said, their defense was in shambles last year, so any player on the defensive side of the ball was in play here. I also like the 3rd round defensive tackle pick out of Georgia, Jonathan Jenkins. Oklahoma's Kenny Stills finds himself on the Saints and that could be a steal of a pick where they got him in the 5th round. Not sure the three picks on the defensive side of the ball is enough, so the team will have to be carried by the offense again. They will still be looking up at the Falcons.
