Hi,

I am mostly a lurker for the last few years, and I try to contribute when I can to the site. I know your in the middle of the server move so I don't expect this to be taken into consideration seriously for a while. But, after seeing a thread started in the NHL forums by a memeber who just signed up to try to advertise his blog, the idea of what the Blackhawks website recently implemented for their forums popped into my head.

What they did was they implemented a mimimum number of posts to start a new thread. On the Hawks website I believe it's 35 posts, but I think they have much less traffic then you do here on this site.

The only downside to this is I know this is a site to help people with their sports questions, and telling people they cannot start a new thread right away might look bad on the site.

Just throwing it out there.

Or they can just do what others do on here... hijack a thread by asking their question.

Unless that number is made ridiculously high, I don't see it having an effect. If someone with the intent of spamming here goes to through the effort of signing up and waiting for the acct to be activated, then having to post 35 meaningless replies to other threads isn't going to stop them.

And I agree with Hawkeye, the net result would be more hijacked threads by newbies unable to create ones themselves... or, almost just as bad, an increase in useless "me too" replies so they can get over the limit and ask the question they signed up to ask.

Good points. Just trying to throw something out there before the hockey season starts. Every year there seems to be a surge of posts from people I whom I have never heard of before, so you start wondering about how much they actually know.

The other problem is that long time members have taken the liberty of spamming as well. The problem arises when they just go ahead and spam away. There are ways to promote yourself here, but it starts with talking to the admins. first. Almost everyone who asks a mod or admin. beforehand is accommodated in some way.

Just ask first.

How about we have a 1 post requirement to start posting?

When I do on the rare occasion visit another forum - and take time to register and then finally post ......... it pisses me off to no end when I finally find out I have to met a minimum requirement.

Yes - I understand the point but still it sucks.

Being that we are primarily an advice forum ........we might as well let new members post away.

We tend to be rough on newbies anyway - even more so on newbies who are jacking around. Plus its rare at least one mod or admin is not present to quickly end a bad situation.

yeah I don't really see the need for this kind've rule or system to be implemented. You regulars all are so bloody well behaved around here -- the mods need something to do!
