Now, Here's what we know.
1 - We are playing Head to head. (12 teams)
The Yahoo standard is great for roto but not so great for H2H play. So, what we're going to do is expand the categories in an effort to make the game less dull with ties and the such.
2 - That we will be using these goalie categories:
W,L,SHO,GA,SA,SVs
What we don't know is what skater categories we want to use. Do we want the goalies to have an equal value to skaters? Or, Do we want skaters to have more play on how our weeks turn out?
Here are the categories we will use for skaters:
G,A,PPP,SHP,PIM,plus/minus,SOG.. An Idea is to expand the categories further. How we can do this is to re-add GWG and to break down PPP into PPG and PPA. If we did this, we'd have a 9x6 format in favor of the skaters and, at the same time, open up the door for a more total game play experience.
Here's my 9x6 proposal broken down:
Skaters
G,A,PPG,PPA,SHP,PIM,Plus/Minus,SOG,GWG for a total of 9 categories.
Goalies
W,L,SHO,SA,GA,SV for a total of 6 categories.
3 - We will be using these roster positions:
C
C
C
RW
RW
LW
LW
D
D
D
G
G
UTIL
UTIL
BN
BN
BN
BN
BN
BN
That's a total of 14 starting spots and 6 bench spots for a total of 20 spots. This will have us draft 240 players (In the 12 team setting) which does not include prospects.
The whole idea of adding another center is to get the best players on our rosters for any given day while reducing the need to carry too may crap D's. Most of us will ride 2-3 D anyway. Plus, with the extra UTIL slot, you can add the missing D there if you are so inclined. This standard opens up various strategies and works wonders in a H2H money league I'm in along with my keeper points league.
4 - 50 move cap. We have been using this number for years in our leagues and it works fine. That breaks down to just over 2 moves per week. Plus, we'd allow the inclusion of moves in trades.
5 - We will use the maximum amount of IR spots Yahoo allows which is 5.
6 - We know that we're going to have 2 separate drafts. 1 standard draft for vets(Once the Yahoo game fires up) and another for prospects not yet added to the Yahoo database. We'll have to do the prospect draft AFTER the standard draft just for year one in order to avoid conflicts. After year one, we will do our prospect draft just after the NHL entry draft has been conducted then have our short, 6-8 player standard draft.
Also, when we complete both inaugural drafts, we can begin to send players to the farm and call up players from the farm. We will be afforded unlimited moves up to the drop of the puck which begins the 08-09 fantasy season and before every season to come. But, once the season begins, the 50 move cap will be in effect.
Also, to move a player to the big squad and to the farm may require you to drop a player. A player that has not played 82 games will not be subject to waivers. But, any player that has played over 82 games is subject to waivers. What this means is that you can send down a drafted vet to your farm during the season only. So as long as that player is not claimed via waivers. Also, any player can remain on your farm when he eclipses the 82 game threshold but will have to be protected as a vet if you wish to retain that player for the forthcoming season.
3 things we don't know.
Keepers
How many to keep we ask? I say we keep 12 non farm players with a 2 goalie cap. I don't like the idea of keeping more than 14, however. let's see what we can work out.
Farm
How many do we want? I say 6 or 8 depending on how many vets we keep. I'd like to keep a cumulative total of 20 (Vets and farm combined). Let's iron this out.
Name of league.
We'll come up with a few names and vote on this at a later date.
I think I pretty much covered all the main issues. But, It's one of those days when I'm drawing blanks. What I'll do for updates is write them in red.
Suckerpuncher will co-commish with me.
Max teams will be 12 and, just so you guys know, this is not a 1st come 1st serve league. We plan on this dynasty lasting a long, long time.
Becasue this is a dynasty, the inaugural draft is extremely important. I'd prefer a slow semi-live draft with trades rather than a live 3-hour draft to decide the fate of teams.
I'm definitely interested in a dynasty, and will apply.
I read over the rules... they sound pretty good.

Why would you add a Saves and Shots against catagory. Most weeks, the winner of one of these catagories will be taking the other anyway. Why not take out one of them to put in Goals against average.

You wanna do a live draft with 12 people who mainly don't know each other? With some bound to be in different timezones?
That would be almost impossible.
Well personally that's my only problem with the league, although the SA vs Saves comment made a lot of sense to.

I know that what I meant is having Saves AND Shots against seems kinda weird. Like someone else posted earlier.
Anyways if this is going to be a live draft in September there is no way I will be able to make it within the typical yahoo hours with Football, work and school so you can just ignore my opinion hahah

I'm still interested, but I don't completely agree with the categories.
For instance... goalies... why include losses? What not use the percentages like GAA and SV%?
Therefore...
W, ShO, GAA, SV% - I think the standard goalie categories work out just fine.
Skaters...
G, A, PPG, PPA, SH Points, PIM, SOG, Faceoff Wins for 8 categories. Therefore 8x4...
I'm a fan of faceoff wins and would place value on the centers, since there is a third center added to the roster slots.
I do like your roster positions though.
Finally... I'm okay with either a forum draft or a live draft. I don't have a problem with either. With a forum draft, however, there would be more opportunity to think through selections. Give a limit for each team of 12 or 24 hours to make a pick and the draft could be done in two weeks if the dedication is there.

I personally like the loss catagory for goalies. In instances where one team has 2 goalies playing on the same night against each other. I feel with a loss catagory, the manager must decide if taking a potential loss (barring OTL) is worth the definate win.

I do agree with wash's point of using the sv% and gaa catagories though. Like I said before having a shots against and a saves catagory is rather redundant.
hc_aysche
07-17-2008, 04:34 PM
I don't think it is. sv% produces an entirely different cat. as those 2 combined. 35 saves and 4 goals against vs 22 saves and 3 goals against is the way it will playout more times than not. With one winning and one losing. The inclusion of those 2 cats is what makes the loss category hold its weight as well. This is H2H so everything changes on a week by week, game by game basis. This opens the door to an entirely different strategy. Yeah, you get saves, but goals against may go up and the probability of a loss increases. The inclusion of SA will reward the goalies that are truly making the stops such as Florida's Vokoun last season. I look at it in the same light as Points vs PPP's for skaters. Which, we can make equally redundant if we so choose.
The live draft rules me out of this league, but with your skater cats, you might also want to consider using points.
I have been in leagues with and without points as a cat and I like having it. If one team gets 10G and 20A and the other team gets 9G and 40A is 1-1 really fair? Seems to me the second team deserves another point. Just my thinking...

Yeah...It's a dynasty. Can't have an AUTO draft for one of these. That would kind of defeat the point.

Yeah, semi live, 12 to 18 hours per pick. Has worked well in the 3 leagues I'm in.
