Im starting another League this year, 3rd one, and the ppl in it would like to have a change of pace from previous years.
Last 6 seasons my other 2 league were point based with the basic setup, G,A, +/-, W,L, for goalies and such.

This league I like to make H2H or even ROTO. What is the best way to set it up AND if it's no trouble, give me some examples on how you have your points based and how often you have to set lineups.

THX

A one-year pool, I assume? (i.e. non-keeper?)

Roto is similar to points. If you want a change try H2H for sure.

Yes its a keeper. So H2H is better? ok Ill try that.

It's not necessarily 'better', it's just different. As dubzz mentioned, roto is pretty similar to points, so if you want something different (not necessarily 'better'), then go with H2H. If you want a bit of a change from points, but don't want to go to something completely different, give roto a try.

I personnally prefer roto, for various reasons, but there are also many reasons why H2H is good, depending on what you're looking for.

Basically, the way I see it, H2H is great because it keeps teams interested longer, so if you have a couple guys who are fantasy hockey newbs, or lose interest easily, H2H is better. Because it's based on matchups, it's a new battle every week, and you can see improvemnets in your team a lot quicker once you make moves than you can in roto. Even if you're in last place mid-season, you're not necessarily out of it, as it's easier to make up ground with a couple good weeks in a row. There's playoffs in H2H, which adds some fun to the end of the season, as even the team in 6th spot could potentially win the championship with some luck a few good weeks in a row. The problem I have with H2H, is because it's based on matchups, there is a lot more luck involved, and the best managed team doesn't always win.

I prefer roto because the best managed team almost always wins. However, because of the way roto is set up, the teams at the bottom of the standings lose hope a lot quicker and give up early cause they think they're too far behind to move up. Also, there's no playoffs in roto, so you never see the 6th place team end up with the championship. Ususally it's the top 3 or 4 teams battling out for the final couple weeks, while the others pretty much just play for pride, and that's if they haven't given up already.

This is a pretty simplistic explanation, there's a lot more to it than what I've said above, but that's the basic reasoning most give for going with one over the other.

Basically, if you've got a bunch of experienced, committed owners who know what they're doing, never give up, and would rather see the winner win based on merit and the best management skills, roto is great. If you've got a bunch of newbs, or guys who aren;t all that committed and may lose interest early/easily, and don't mind seeing luck factor into the equation a little more, than H2H is the way to go, as it will keep people intersted longer.

Thx alot guys. I wanted to change things up in the 3rd league so RoTo and H2H do seem to be the change I need to make.

As in a points league, we need to set lineups every day, in H2H and Roto, is it the same process??

Chgor summed up the differences between roto and H2H quite nicely... figure out which style works best for your league (i.e. roto/best managed team wins vs. H2H/keeps everyone involved) and proceed from there.

You'd need to figure out the size of your roster, and which categories to use. There are a lot of categories, so you need to figure out which ones work for you.

In one league I'm in, the cats are
Statistical Categories (Skaters):
----------------------------------
Goals
Assists
Plus/Minus
Penalty Minutes
Power Play Points
Shorthanded Points
Game- Winning Goals

Statistical Categories (Goalies):
-----------------------------------
Wins
GAA
Save Percentage
ShutoutsThere are also categories like faceoffs won, shots on goal, saves, etc.
