NEW YORK (AP) -- Now it's New York Mets (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/nym/;_ylt=AizDvS0OBn5DAAzcn2Ba5Mmpu7YF) pitcher Pedro Martinez (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/4875/;_ylt=AhG5Mgkabc3fNX9eloTnE.Kpu7YF) and Hall of Famer Juan Marichal who are being denounced for animal fighting.

A video of Martinez and Marichal at a cockfight was posted this week on YouTube and it showed the two laughing before releasing the roosters. They took part as honorary "soltadores," the word used to describe the person who puts the animal to fight.

The fight takes place in their home country, the Dominican Republic, where cockfighting is legal and popular. It is banned throughout the United States. Martinez told the Mets the cockfight occurred at least two years ago.

Come on let's hear it. All of you who bashed Michael Vick over and over and over... The lovable Pedro Martinez involved in animal cruelty. Oh wait... I know, you are gonna argue that it is legal therefore it is OK. Or that its a rooster and not a dog. Boo...

I don't think i've heard Pedro called lovable before. He will take some shit for this and rightly so but there's 2 huge differences. The 1st you mentioned, it's not illegal there The second is that he was just watching, he wasn't organizing it and slaughtering the roosters after they fought.

Plus the difference is a dogs are "mans best friend" while chickens/ rosters are slaughtered and eaten every day. I am not saying what Pedro did is right, all I am saying is there is a BIG difference between dogs(Vick) and chicken/rosters(Pedro). My 2 cents.

In no way am I claiming that this is all fine and dandy, but in my opinion, this doesn't even come close to the situation involving Vick.

Perhaps this is jsut ignorance on my part, as I can't claim to be an expert on cockfighting and what's invovled with it, but I don't see this as being as cruel as the dogs. Vick (and all dog fighters) tortured, drowned, electrocuted and beat the dogs.

As far as I know, these types of things don't happen to the roosters. They merely get them riled up and let them go at it. Doesn't seem much different than if 2 roosters in a coop both decided they were having a bad day.

Again, I don't think it's right that any animals are forced to fight for the sake of human enjoyment. I'm sure any rooster that is injured is just killed, which is completely awful and wrong. But to me, the level of forceful, cruel punishment during the "training" probably isn't the same here. Bascially, both "sports" (I cringe using that phrase) are SOOOOOO wrong, but the dog fighting takes it to a whole new level.

Again, if I'm sorely mistaken, I take it all back....

Then how do we explain the contents of Dinty Moore Beef Stew.

Woof

thats old news now, the two situations are alot different. its not like pedro was organizing the event or anything he was just invited there. and plus it is legal there. i dont like pedro at all but this is really not that big of a deal. vick i didnt really mind before his scandal, but he is a complete ass for doing what he did, just disgusting.

I think it's fine. No big deal. Blow way out of proportion as usual.

What Vick did was inhuman, what Pedro did was a Seinfeld episode.

This is not even close to what Vick did...what Vick did was completely ILLEGAL! Pedro is innocent because it is very legal in his country to have cock fights. Im not saying this is the right thing to do but you cant just say he is a horrible man. He was brought up with the culture and shouldnt be put in the same crowd as Vick.

Legality VS Morality

If what Vick had done was in Mexico and "legal" does that make it ok?

Either way I don't care, Vick's an idiot but is still one of my favorite QBs. What he does off the field is his own stupidity.

Pedro is one of my favorite pitchers....don't give a fuck what he does elsewhere, that's his business.

He was the special honoree something (whatever the hell the official title is called) that throws the freakin' things in the ring to start the fight. He wasn't just watching and secondly...they eat the freakin' roosters that lose. I am not comparing it to Vick and the dogfighting in a sense of legal vs. non-legal, I am just saying all the animal lovers that immediately shit on Vick need to be shitting on Pedro as well.

See...that was the point I was trying to make. I didn't want this to be turned into a legal vs. non-legal issue because it has been well stated that in that country cockfighting is legal.

Pedro was involved within the realm of animal cruelty, but all of the sudden its OK. Come get off it. I don't care if they were rats. ...and this is a point I brought up in the Vick thread when that shit was going down. You can't scream animal cruelty for some animals and not others. Its hypocritical. I don't care if its legal or not. Not the point. Pedro was seen in a video holding a freakin' rooster and preparing for the rooster to brawl with another rooster. Shown laughing, smiling, cheering... He is guilty of animal cruelty. Just like Vick is with the dogs.
