I've added something nifty to the site as an experiment.
Now when you post a link to most video sites like YouTube, it will automatically display the play box within the post...

thanks... made the song of the day and funny video threads even more of a time-wasting, procrastination-from-work tool! ;)

WICKED, I always wondered if that was possible like on the space or facebook! But does that kind've setting kill your bandwidth, or does it have no affect whatsoever? Either way, great job!

Nah, the only affect is slow loading of pages with lots of video -- and that's because your computer is having to render/load them all..

I turned this off, it was causing a lot of problems for some users (including myself).

I haven't heard people complain about it. It worked fine for me at all times.

Sorry to disappoint. Maybe I can look into enabling it per user -- some sort of profile option.

I understand. As long as the product is universally distributed among the population fairly then that's what counts the most. It just sucks when you have something better and you downgrade you know? I think it's like that in all walks of life.

I did mention in my first post that it was an experiment. ;)
Yes, I understand -- but for example, when I go into the 'funny videos' thread, the damn thing just freezes, makes it hard to scroll... I think it's also a product of how many posts a person is displaying per page. I've heard this from others as well.

Yeah I can understand how that thread could be a problem. With so many videos on one page it would take forever just to load the page itself.

I thought it was great, but I guess I can understand how some of the stone-age computer people would be annoyed.
If you could make it a user option, though, that would be sweet.

I loved the feature! That would be amazing if it would work user specific though.
I'm sure the requirements aren't that high to make it run fairly fast, I know my boat anchor computer here at work doesn't have a problem. Although I did notice the Boston - Montreal thread loaded a few seconds slower with the video's, but I can handle waiting a few seconds :).

I understand where Jeff is coming from. I used to have a slow computer up until recently. Its a cool feature to have if you have a fast computer, but it can be a BIG pain when you are running on a slower system. If you can manage a way for it to be turned on or off in our profiles that would be great, if not it not the end of the world...trust me.

Jeff let it on and just buy yourself a new PC with the tons of money you receive from the PayPal donations

My PC is actually not slow. I suspect it has more to do with the type of Flash player I'm using -- the slow computer complaints came from others.

If you could make it a user option, though, that would be sweet.I have a really powerful computer but for the life of it it can't seem to handle multiple videos on the same page.

Linux I'm guessing? Yeah, it's still not slow enough for me to complain about but I notice it is slower on Linux vs. windows... but then so is firefox

Adobe hates having to support flash for linux, so it just runs slower. No one knows why firefox is slow on linux.

I don't know if this forum is a democracy but if we put it to a vote do you think people would want passiveVid back? I know I would. You just have to avoid that one thread with a bunch in there.

If your computer can't handle video's like this, then it's time for an upgrade as there are more applications it wont be able to handle as well.

The toggle idea is a darn good one.

Those who run Linux machines will have slowdown issues even if they have a decent computer. Linux flash players really suck. And that seems to be what Jeff uses (at least some of the time).

Not sure if this is a possibility in vBulletin.
